background:
Founded as Whitney and Rice in Massachusetts, a manufacturer of silver products. Changed hands in 1882 and became Carpenter and Bliss, then E.A. Bliss and Co, Inc. Moved to Meriden, Connecticut in 1890. After WWI the firm began production of jewelry. James Napier became president in 1920 and the company name was again changed - this time to Napier-Bliss Co. In 1922, the name was changed to Napier Company. Still in business today as a major manufacturer of costume jewelry and increasingly highly collectible as pieces are harder to find in mint condition. Some early designs were Egyptian influenced, particularly those of the 1920s and 1930s. As the Mexican silver jewelry became collected as art pieces (Spratling, Castillo, Pineda, Matl, Davis ...) Napier mirrored that aesthetic. Later, the chunky gilt metal charm bracelets of the 1950s and 1960s have now become a recent collecting rage. A variety of trademarks all including the name Napier.
This necklace is a uniquely American design of the Mexican Taxco influence - the hand-worked silver and onyx designs that now run into the thousands of dollars at auctions today.
The earrings look as if they had been designed at the same time of the necklace - great care taken to follow the line and design on the necklace - and they are
of quality sterling silver.
A beautiful demi-parure - unique and reasonable. Will not find this set
anywhere else.
Other pieces being sold - vintage Mexican silver, antique African Mali necklace, and an art deco Danecraft bracelet.
